Why Do We Associate Getting Older With Getting Fatter?

“Wait until you’re my age, you’ll gain weight and lose fitness just like I did…”

This quote is one of the most frustrating things I hear regularly. Why have we just accepted that we will enter a state of decline as soon as we hit 30? In short, this isn’t a biological phenomenon which is set in stone. Instead, priorities change. Being in good shape at 25 years old is impressive, but not very difficult. But being fit and healthy at 45? Balancing work, kids, marriage and elderly family members? That’s much more challenging. In today’s newsletter, I’ll outline what metabolism actually is, how it changes as we get older, and the real reasons we seem to struggle to maintain our level of fitness and function as we age.
